Faith, Not Doctors, Cures Sick People

Tuesday November 21, 2006
Jesus taught that with faith, you could accomplish anything - few Christians today really take that seriously, though. They may rely upon faith in a number of areas, but usually when it comes to coping psychologically when life creates problems. When it comes to more substantive matter, however, like health and jobs, people rely upon much more practical solutions. But not everyone.

Rick Ross reprints an article from the Daily Journal from a a couple of years ago about the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn, a Christian church which rejects modern medicine completely:

"The people that lift their voice and persecute you the most are the people that don't know nothing about you," said Nation, a fourth-generation elder in the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn. "Maybe some of them would stone us if they thought they had a chance."

Can we say "persecution complex"?

What repeatedly draws attention to the church is a controversial stand against modern medical treatment that periodically results in a loss of health or life that most people would consider tragic. ... “How many babies die in the hospital every day?” [Tom] Nation asked. “I don’t feel like doctors ever save a person’s life. They think they do, but how do they know?”

A growing number of church members are beginning to seek conventional medical treatment, Nation said, but according to his beliefs, they are making the wrong choice and should not expect God’s help. “It’s weakness,” he said. “If they had enough faith, they wouldn’t need to.”

There is no question that these are sincere believers - but that's the point. Sincere belief like that can readily lead people astray, and that in the end often causes a great deal of suffering among the weakest and most innocent. Christians with more "mainstream" religious beliefs should take a seriously look at themselves and ask what makes their position more rational, reasonable, or "true" than the beliefs of people like the above — beliefs which have repeatedly led to the deaths of children.

(1) John says:

If you have faith that you will have an afterlife in paradise, doesn’t it make sense to fear life more than death? Aren’t those who die young the lucky ones? Of course, if you have doubts, you might want to invest in a good medical care plan. Just in case.
