Discussion: Regulating the Internet

A forum member writes: Even though the net was developed with government money, they weren't paying attention (just a bunch of geeks masturbating), hence it took shape in a way that the government would never have designed, open sourced, relatively anonymous, without national divisions. [Internet 2] is intended much more like the commercial cable model, where big money entertainment providers (easily regulated) provide high bandwidth content to consumers without embarrassing little websites discussing the emperor's nakedness.

It is certainly true that the American government has repeatedly tried to impose stricter controls on what can be found on the internet, but are certain officials really planning long-term for a replacement of the internet that can be completely controlled and regulated? If so, that could pose serious problems for the free flow of information over the entire world. Read More...
