Conservatives Rethinking Democracy

By November 10, 2006

Follow me on:

In the wake of the loss to Republicans and religious conservatives in the recent election, something rather curious has occurred: some religious conservatives are expressing doubts about their commitment to democracy. They aren't denying that the election results are valid, but they deny that valid democratic results should be allowed to determine who leads the nation. Is anyone surprised?

Here are some comments posted at Free Republic:

This is a Disaster for America and the World and makes me question the wisdom of our democracy. The Democrats, given power will destroy the nation and therefore for the sake of our nation is should be considered if the Democrats should be seated by the current GOP Leadership. Such an action would look bad for the GOP but would be the best for America.

no such thing as a moderate democrat. they still bow to the same gods: abortion, tax hikes, appeasement and socialism. which committee chairman the 'moderates' put into power is not a stark raving liberal?

The Media. They need to be knocked down a notch or two. We are at war, and what they have done to harm our country is indefensible! They have their boys in, now what? I can actually see CNN chomping at the bit to see a real nuke go off in one of our cities. We have capitulated to our enemy, they are the real winners here. The American people do not realize what they have done.

The strings have been pulled, we will just have to wait to see who wins the war. I have little faith in the American public, having the pleasure of traveling our beautiful country on a regular basis, and meeting many of the limp wrist-ed, which are getting rarer, as the illegals now have their jobs. The majority of people I work around, are the "you owe me" crowd. Fifteen years ago I would have never made a statement like this, but things have really changed. Allot of these people I have the pleasure to work around were born in barns, or jerked up, not raised. We are loosing the cultural war, and the War on Terror.

Time for everyone to give the rest of thier income over to the tax man, turn in your gun, and start learning the five pillars of Islam.

Isn't it interesting that anti-democratic attitudes find such a strong resonance among those who simultaneously complain about anti-democratic attitudes among Muslims?

Every vote cast for a Democrat yesterday was a vote for al-Qaeda.

There's more:

Show me a man who loses gracefully and I will show you loser. Republicans have been graceful for the last 6 years lying around without answering the Democrats verbal abuss. Now they see what it got them and they are graceful. Thanks ,but no thanks.

I think we're in for a long haul of DemonRAT rule. It'll take a long time to boot them out. And in the meantime their marxist agenda will continue to advance. Leftist Judicial nominees, trying to get rid of the electoral college, defunding the mission in Iraq, embyonic stem cells to name a few. Oh yes let's be civil but let's not delude ourselves either.

[emphasis added]

Little Green Footballs is no better in it's anti-democratic attitude:

expect the next attack ... this will be a big one with many casualties ... which is why I moved the family away from the city ... I am retiring and never setting foot in DC again

Our enemies are gonna party like it's 1941. But of course, the MSM will ignore it.

I quite [sic]. I not going to vote again. It's time I gave up on this political bullshit. I just hope the nuke attack comes soon. Let it be on the East Coast where it belongs.

I think this demostrates pretty clearly that voting should be a privilege, NOT a right.

Maybe a divided government is not a bad thing. They can't do anything to screw us up anymore than we already are. We just need to weather the nuclear attack when it happens and we will be okay. Let the military take over. I advocate a military coup.

Bush is losing precisely because he has took the high road after 9/11 instead of Zyclon B-ing most of the muslim world after attacking our shores as they have been doing to our shipping since 1800. This is a world war and not a tea party for the Yale/Harvard clique... Islam must have a boot smashing into its face forever until it becomes a grown up religion not bent on murdering everyone on the planet... Bush cannot comprehend this or the Donks even less...they do not have the intestinal fortitude for it...

If your commitment to democracy is dependent upon winning, then you were never really committed to democracy in the first place. It's like being committed to free speech: it's not really free speech that you believe in if you only support freedom for speech you approve of. Being committed to free speech requires supporting freedom for speech you disagree with and even hate.

Thus, the people here are revealing that they were never really committed to democracy and liberty in the first place all they ever cared about was power and for them, democracy was never anything more than a means to that end, something to be discarded at the first opportunity.

This anti-democratic, anti-non-Christian attitude can be heard loud in clear in the case of the first Muslim elected to Congress:

"Tonight, we made history," Mr Ellison said in a victory speech to supporters. "We won a key election, but we did much more than that. We showed that a candidate can run a 100% positive campaign and prevail, even against tough opposition." ...

He converted to Islam while as a student, but talked little about his religious background during the campaign. Although he follows Islamic law in his personal life, he stresses that he is not the "Muslim candidate" for Congress.

"I'm not running as a Muslim, I'm running as an American, as a person that's trying to help our country be better," he told Voice of America in an interview earlier this year. "But I do hope that if we win, inshallah [God Willing], in November, that it will signal to Muslims that we should engage in the American political system. It will signal to people who are not Muslims that Muslims have a lot to offer to the United States and the improvement of our country."

What do the people of Free Republic think about this?

Now we'll be arrested and beheaded for sure...

Who voted for him.....and WHY? Sharia Law coming to America.

The whole "Death to America" crowd won last night. The beast is being fed!

Compared to Wellstone, this guy is probably a conservative.
True. Stalin is conservative compared to Wellstone. At least Stalin believed in a strong national defense.

Yes, being Muslim is just like being Stalin and that's a reason for all religious conservatives to be afraid that they'll be killed. These are not people with a high capacity for living with diversity in viewpoints, religion, beliefs, politics, or anything else. These are not people for whom "tolerance" is a concept that can have a great deal of meaning.

Speaking of finally hearing the truth, Rush Limbaugh has finally decided to come clean: he never liked many of the Republicans, either. Yes, it's true all this time that Rush Limbaugh has been defending the Republicans and promoting their agenda, he hasn't been truly honest:

"I feel liberated, and I'm going to tell you as plainly as I can why. I no longer am going to have to carry the water for people who I don't think deserve having their water carried. Now, you might say, "Well, why have you been doing it?" Because the stakes are high! Even though the Republican Party let us down, to me they represent a far better future for my beliefs and therefore the country's than the Democrat Party and liberalism does."

So Rush Limbaugh thinks that it is OK to be dishonest with his listeners in the interest of advancing the Republican, Christian Right agenda. Regardless of how dishonest, corrupt, incompetent, or otherwise worthless some Republican or Christian Right proposal or politician is, it sounds like Rush Limbaugh will "carry the water" for them simply because they are Republican and Christian. Rush Limbaugh sounds like he's saying that he's willing to distort the truth to whatever degree is necessary in order for his listeners to not know the truth and thereby think negative things about the GOP.

Anyone who would do this would also do the opposite: say awful things about the Democratic Party, no matter how reasonable, fair, or correct he really thinks their politicians or proposals are, simply because they are Democratic. Anyone who would distort the truth to create a false image of virtue for one party will distort the truth to create a false image of vice for the other party. The question I have is: why do any listeners trust him now that the admits that he'll give them misinformation and disinformation in the service of his personal political agenda?

Just in case you think this is an isolated and unique incident, we can find Hugh Hewitt say something very similar:

And it is a wonderful day for new media, especially talk radio. For two years we have had to defend the Congressional gang that couldn't shoot straight. Now we get to play offense.

Hugh Hewitt is actually going a bit further: not only does he admit that "we" (I wonder how many others, besides himself and Rush Limbaugh, he has in mind) were defending people they didn't really believe were defensible (and thus that they were distorting the truth in the service of a political agenda), but now "we" can "play offense." This is what they really want to do and like to do most: be offensive by attacking the things they don't like rather than making positive arguments on behalf of real policy proposals.

Yet, these are the same people who have also been complaining about conservatism and the Republican Party "losing their way." If that's really the case, then they are the ones who have to shoulder a significant amount of the blame for it. You can't distort the truth in ways like this and claim that you're on the right path the whole time.

There’s also the FreeConservatives election night thread, by way of Pharyngula.

I love how quickly they change their tune…

It’s a good thing none of those chickenhawks would ever dare enroll, or you’d be facing a military coup…

Still, watch your back comes 2008 if the Dems keep the House and Senate, and gain the presidency too.

Republicans have always been crooks and traitors since the civil war. Of course they want a plotocratic elite or a dictator. Half-baked ignorant people always want such things.

Democracy is more important than which party wins, picking out isolated comments doesn’t prove anything. especially considering how many leftists I have run into who support the likes of Fidel Castro. This doesn’t mean all liberals support him, even though some do.
