I'm a 9th grade World History teacher. It seems that nearly every teacher at my school is a creationist. Just yesterday, a student asked aloud in class if evolution doesn't violate the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. Of course he couldn't pronounce it. I was cool. I flicked the objection off my shoulder like a flea (making the students laugh) and said "thats it?" I then did the best I could in explaining the 2nd Law (Thanks to everyone here and at talk-origins) and how it doesn't apply to open systems. I drew the sun and the earth on the board and used the embryo and the snowflake analogies. I did good: they were impressed. Then I said "whoever told you evolution violates the 2nd Law either doesn't understand the Law or is deliberately misleading you." I expect bid trouble next week.

Fighting creationism means fighting local religious orthodoxy, and that isn’t easy. Have you ever had such an experience? Read More...
