The Daily Mail reports:
Friends say her divorce lawyer father, Martin Holmes, and his wife, Kathy, have a ‘brittle’ relationship with the notoriously controlling Cruise. They are said to fear they have been eased out of their daughter’s life since she became engaged to the 44-year-old Mission: Impossible star within weeks of their meeting 15 months ago.
To add to their unease, Cruise’s Scientology-inspired edict about Suri’s isolation meant that Mr and Mrs Holmes did not see the baby for a full two weeks after she was born. The situation has not been helped by Mr Holmes’ insistence on negotiating a £22 million ‘pre-nuptial’ agreement, guaranteeing his daughter and granddaughter a trust fund of £8 million even if the couple do not marry.
I guess a divorce lawyer would know to have a pre-nuptial agreement signed and sealed in advance — but what’s really interesting is that he made sure that his granddaughter’s future would be taken care of. That’s pretty smart. Unfortunately, that hasn’t helped him maintain the level of contact with his daughter that he’d like to have. Isolating people from friends and family is a tactic usually employed by groups saddled with the label “cult,” but Scientology doesn’t like that label. So why are they doing this with Katie Holmes?
Her parents are also known to be worried about Katie’s indoctrination in Scientology - which teaches that humans are descended from aliens known as ‘Thetans’, who were banished to Earth 75 million years ago.
Sources close to the couple claim Suri has already had a Scientology naming ceremony designed to ‘welcome the baby to Earth’. During the ceremony, a Scientology minister is said to have told the child: “Hello. Your name is Suri. Does that upset you? You are a Scientologist now. Welcome.”
Indeed, Tom sent out a coded warning to his prospective in-laws just before her birth: “You can be Catholic and a Scientologist. You can be Jewish and a Scientologist. But we’re just Scientologists.” Her parents have, it seems, every reason to feel concerned.
Since her meeting with Cruise, the Batman Begins actress has been undergoing intensive daily sessions with Scientology tutors to study the teachings of the Church’s founder, science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.
So, you’re a Scientologist as soon as you’re born? I wonder if the Church of Scientology would acknowledge a decision of hers to leave, should she try to make such a choice. Even the Catholic Church waits until baptism before calling a helpless infant a “Catholic” (and a lot of emphasis is put on Confirmation, when a person makes a conscious choice to become part of the church).
I think that it suggests a certain level of insecurity on the part of religious leaders for them to want to declare an infant to be a member of their cult right after the moment of birth. It’s as if they know that they can’t attract rational people once they mature, so they move to heavy indoctrination from an early age.
Katie is said by associates to be exhausted by having to juggle her studies with her duties as a new mother. But Cruise, according to some reports, wants her to get pregnant again before the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Katie is on a strict diet and exercise regime devised by her fiancé to lose the weight she put on during pregnancy. This, too, has drawn anger from her father, who complained last month: “My daughter needs rest, relaxation and recuperation. It’s all down to Scientology and I simply can’t go along with what is happening.”
Boy, it sounds like Tom Cruise really has Katie running. Why does he want her to get pregnant again so quickly, even before she has a chance to really enjoy her time with their new infant? Is Tom Cruise trying to prove something or does he have some reason to think that he’s running out of time for something? What is all this doing to Katie Holmes? I hope she doesn’t suffer from any sort of post partum depression because Tom won’t let her use the standard medical treatments.
Even if he wasn’t into Scientology, I’d have to feel sorry for Katie Holmes because it sounds like Tom Cruise is a very controlling spouse. If it’s Scientology that’s causing Tom to think all this is necessary, then it’s really no excuse.

Not to make light of the controlling nature of this cult, but no matter how indoctrinated she may be, she is a free adult citizen of the U.S. She too shares in the accountability of her choices.

Agreed. Allowing Tom to take over her life is a decision Katie will someday regret, if she doesn’t already. I’ve known several women who allowed themselves to lose their identity to their partner. Is love really that blind?
