Intelligent Design and Religion

Friday June 23, 2006
Many defenders of "Intelligent" Design insist that it is a scientific position being pursued for scientific reasons. They emphatically deny that it is a religious position being pursued for religious reasons. Leaders and founders of the movement, however, have made a number of comments that state exactly the opposite of this.

Wesley R. Elsberry quotes them:

Dembski wrote: The world is a mirror representing the divine life. The mechanical philosophy was ever blind to this fact. Intelligent design, on the other hand, readily embraces the sacramental nature of physical reality. Indeed, intelligent design is just the Logos theology of John’s Gospel restated in the idiom of information theory.
(Signs of Intelligence)

[DI CRSC Senior Advisor Phillip] Johnson wrote:
Our strategy has been to change the subject a bit so that we can get the issue of intelligent design, which really means the reality of God, before the academic world and into the schools.
(American Family Radio, Jan 10, 2003 broadcast.)

Alongside a focus on influential opinion-makers, we also seek to build up a popular base of support among our natural constituency, namely, Christians.
(The Wedge Strategy)

The context of the above quotes is an article describing how poor Discovery Institute people do when trying to critique media reports on "Intelligent" Design. It's definitely worth a read as it shows just what qualifies as "scholarship" for these people.

Hello,

Intelligent designers are giving many scientific arguments against Darwinism that are mostly answered only by bad name calling. Does that belong to scientific debate? I don’t think so. Secondly, all is about interpretation of the same facts and figures. Both parties have their understanding. One is atheistic another is theistic. But briefly we can everything boil down to creation either by chance or direction. To most of the people direction makes more sense since nobody have ever observed anything being created by chance. Everything had/has a cause. Intelligent design is finding out the unregressable ultimate cause of all causes.

Don’t just make this claim; provide the “scientific” arguments you think exist.

Secondly, all is about interpretation of the same facts and figures. Both parties have their understanding. One is atheistic another is theistic.

Funny, but intelligent design proponents insist that it does not point necessarily to a god. Are you saying that they are lying?

But briefly we can everything boil down to creation either by chance or direction.

This is a false dilemma fallacy which reveals that you don’t actually understand the issues. Put briefly, evolution doesn’t rely on either chance or direction.

To most of the people direction makes more sense since nobody have ever observed anything being created by chance.

Well, if this is your idea of a “scientific” argument, I guess we can safely ignore “intelligent” design.

Everything had/has a cause.

Prove it.

Intelligent design is finding out the unregressable ultimate cause of all causes.

No, it’s about finding a pseudo-scientific rationalization for religious beliefs that one is no longer comfortable with basing solely on faith, tradition, and superstition anymore.

(3) John says:

Avadhuta,

Science is not argument and debate, science is, “The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena.”

As mentioned in the article by Wesley R. Elsberry, there is no “theory of intelligent design.”

There is no debate. ID is not science.
