Surveys show that atheists are the most distrusted and despised minority in America. People are more willing to vote for or trust every other minority over atheists - including Muslims and gays. Atheists are thus the one minority it is still considered acceptable to discriminate and express bigotry against. People don't think twice about saying things about atheists they'd never say about other groups. This includes liberals and progressive who don't want to be associated with the godless. I am an atheist and proud of it. My atheism is the product of years of reasoned study. Nor is my atheism the result of any emotive religious bias shown by my parents. The fact is that my parents allowed me to attend church and sunday school. I am a materialist-if something exists materially then I will accept it and the idea of its existence. Humans have been born with big brains-as far as is known humanity is the only species capable of the creation and discussian of ideas The idea of a supernatural all-powerful being is just that: an idea. I can think of the idea of a unicorn, I can also visualise what a unicorn looks like. However, that does not prove that the unicorn exists-in fact we know that unicorns do not exist. The idea of an all-powerful supernatural being, known as God, comes under the same category as the unicorn, no material evidence exists for for its existence. I am in great sympathy for the atheists of the United States. You have some great scientists and thinkers in the country but you also face the existence of evangelical fascism. Some may say, “thats a bit strong”. I say, “no way”, just look at what the Hagee, Hinns and Robertson say. They want a theocratic constitution in the United States. The civil liberties of a liberal secular democracy will be ended. The rights of women to decide what to do with their own bodies would be ended, Gays would be imprisoned and what is left of the independence of the legal system in the United States would be ended. The Hagees of this world would be able to tell you what to read and view. The only Television channel available to show films would be those owned by Dove. The films that channel shows are excruciatingly awful. The Nazis burned the books of their thinking opponents, the evangelial brownshirts would do that through their control of the legal system. Unthinkable: who decided the result of the 2000 presidential election-the voters, no, the rightwing controlled supreme court. The so-called progessives who attack atheists are attacking their own civil-rights. Those of us who prefer reason to superstition and witch-craft should unite in opposition to religious fascism be if christian or islamic.

What is it about some memes/ideas, such as gods, that make them largely immune to mental objectivity? Of course gods & unicorns are both ficitonal inventions of the human mind, but why is one readily accepted as such, while the other is stridently defended as being real, despite a complete lack of supporting evidence? Perhaps because many people (consciously or subconsciously) desire for gods to be real, their standard of evidence is lowered or removed such that the mere existence of holy texts which mention their god is considered authority or “proof” enough.

A few years ago I would’ve been among those who would call such a statement too strong, but the more I get to know the evangelical right, and the more they exert their power in politics & the media, the more I tend to agree that they are becoming a genuine threat to the future of this country. Of course, they no doubt say the same thing about us freethinkers, scientists & atheists.
