The presence of commercial advertising on the internet isn’t surprising, given the fact that decent sites can be expensive to maintain. There are reasons to think that commercial advertising undermines important aspects of the mission of some sites, though, so perhaps people should take a step back and think about what the increasing commercialization of the internet may mean.

I think it’s important for all users of the internet to understand that nothing is free, that someone pays for everything. Yes, I don’t have to pay a search fee to use Google gut when I search for something, the answer that comes in first is not the best answer to my search, it is an advertiser who paid to be first. To me this makes internet searches unreliable.
