Bloomberg Denounces Intelligent Design, Creationism

Opposition to evolutionary science and support of various forms of creationism is a Republican issue - almost no Democrats defend such things. Nevertheless, there are some Republicans who agree with supporting science over superstition and oppose efforts to inject religion and creationism into schools.

The NY Daily News reports:

“Today we are seeing hundreds of years of scientific discovery being challenged by people who simply disregard facts that don’t happen to agree with their agendas,” he told medical graduates of his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University. [...]

Bloomberg said he was angered to see fundamentalists trying to turn back the clock on teaching evolution in schools - and denounced the intelligent design theory as “creationism by another name.” “It boggles the mind that nearly two centuries after Darwin ... this country is still debating the value of evolution,” he said.

To be fair, Bloomberg was a Democrat all his life and appears to have only joined the Republican Party in order to have an easier time in getting elected mayor — so maybe he’s not the best example of a Republican who supports science over superstition. Still, I guess he’s better than nothing and if it takes a bunch of Democrats joining the GOP to drag it into 20th century science, then we should be happy for what we get.
