This Date in History: Pope Pius VIII on Freedom of Conscience
Saturday April 29, 2006
April 29, 1814: In an Apostolic Letter, Pope Pius VIII complained about the French constitution, saying that "it not only permits freedom of conscience and of cult, but promises support and protection to the ministers of what are called the cults. By granting this freedom to all cults ...the Church, the immaculate bride of Christ, is put on the same level with heretical sects and even with Jewish perfidy."
