Twisted Teens: Friends of Homophobic Nazi Killer Speak Out

Monday February 6, 2006
By now you have probably heard about Jacob Robida, aka Jake Jekyll, the homophobic, white supremacist Nazi teen who shot up a gay bar in New Bedford, MA, and was later shot and killed by police in Arkansas (but not before he killed a police officer himself). The signs of violence were known to his friends who visited his website; today, his friends are unapologetic themselves.

People are leaving messages on Jake Jekyll's site:

RIP Jake. Ill forever love you. I'll see you soon. I promise. No matter what you will forever be in my heart. I f*cking love you killa.

The site itself is disturbing enough, but the friends are worse. Friends who have been interviewed have made it clear that they knew he was obsessed with violence and had all sorts of Nazi paraphernalia in his room. They could see his obsessions on his site. Instead of using his recent actions as a good reason for some introspection and reflection on their own attitudes, they are just continuing the cycle. He’s being praised by his friends who think he’s in Shangri-La, who think that the must have had a good reason for being a violent, murdering bigot, and so forth.

What is wrong with these people? To call such teens “twisted” strikes me as an understatement. It’s hard to see them as anything other than a threat to themselves and their community — just as Jacob obviously was. Had someone intervened with him earlier, lives would have been saved. Will anyone intervene with the people above?
