Is Jesus an Eagle Scout?
In essence, they assume that living a godly and religious life given them a special ability to discern whatever God wants for everyone else. Robert Kirby describes a situation like this occurring in the context of the Boy Scouts:
[A] reader recently wrote and asked if failure to contribute $50 to the Boy Scouts of America really meant that he did not have a testimony of Jesus Christ. I hasten to point out that I am not in jail right now, ample proof that I was not present when this stupidity was uttered. But according to the reader, who seemed sincere, a member of his LDS ward's leadership said it was so. [T]hose who did not cough up the money were said to be testimony deficient. At the very least, they were uninspired.
When a person finds that God is often agreeing with whatever it is that they want and like, you can be pretty sure that religion is simply serving as a mask for personal prejudices.
