Discussion: Designated Cult Groups

A forum member writes: I'm curious as to how groups get listed as a cult. I've been looking through cult information sites and lists of known cults and due to my lack of knowledge of some "popular" religious sects there were a few listed on cult watch type sites that surprised the heck out of me. Mainly the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons. These people come to my door!! And, although I'm generally unpleasant to them, I had no clue they were technically cults. The only one that I had previously heard of that didn't surprise me was Scientology. So...what technically makes a cult a cult?

The label "cult" is an interesting one - it often seems as though "cults" are basically any religion that is small, new, and/or "different" in terms of belief and doctrine from mainstream religious groups. What do you think about so-called "cults"? Read More...
