A forum member describes an incident from a nursing home:
Yesterday mom and I were sitting in the kitchen area talking when one of the residents walked in, sat down for a few minutes and then got up to walk around again. She was soon escorted back into the kitchen by a man and a woman and my first thought was that she finally had visitors so of course I was happy for her. Then I noticed that these visitors kept handing her what they called "bread" and trying to get her to eat it. It was when she was handled a small container of "grape juice" that my interest was really piqued because I realized they were trying to get her to accept communion. Poor Edith was sure they were trying to force some medicine down her throat and she was resisting. Then came the prayers. I just sat like a frog with a gaping mouth catching flies. This couple didn't stop there, they then spied another resident sitting in a corner napping with her head on the table. They couldn't even allow the poor woman to sleep, went right over with their cracker crumbs and grape juice and proceeded to go through this communion thing with her too!
Personally I find the above actions to be outrageous. It's one thing if people volunteer to make such services available to residents who want them, but in this case it seems obvious that they are simply taking advantage of people who are unable to make such decisions on their own - and the nursing home itself is equally guilty for not paying more attention to what is going on.
