Kitzmiller v. Dover: Intelligent Design Dumped in Dover, Pennsylvania

Wednesday December 21, 2005
On December 20, 2005, Judge John E. Jones III released his decision in the case of Kitzmiller v. Dover. In this case, the Dover School Board in Pennsylvania was sued by local parents over the introduction of Intelligent Design to 9th grade science classes. The Dover school board wrote a "disclaimer" which simultaneously denigrated evolution and encouraged the religious belief system of Intelligent Design.

Intelligent Design is little more than a theological parasite on the proper science of evolution. Supporters try to create an illusion validity for Intelligent Design by framing the debate in a manner that makes their system appear scientific — but that's all it is, an illusion. It feeds off of the perception of scientific validity while producing nothing of value and substance itself.

All of this was made manifest in the Dover trial. The decision, written by a conservative Christian, was unambiguous in its condemnation not only of attempts to portray Intelligent Design as a science, but also of the the duplicity and dishonesty of the school board members involved.

My review and analysis of the decision can be read in the following articles:

My past coverage of the story over the past year can be found here: Kitzmiller v. Dover: Teaching Intelligent Design in the Dover Schools. Elsewhere on About you can read the coverage of the U.S Politics Guide as well as reactions from the Islam, Catholicism, and Christianity Guides.
