Daily Poll: Is Your Doorknob Private?

Tuesday November 15, 2005
Police can rub an object with a special cloth, test the cloth, and determine if the object has been in contact with things like illegal drugs. Police want the authority to do this and use positive test results as 'probable cause' for searching your home. Do you think that's acceptable?

Daily Poll: Is it a violation of your privacy to test your doorknob in order to find evidence to be used to get a search warrant for your house?

  • No, my doorknob is available for anyone in the public to touch so it's not really private, is it?
  • No, at least not so long as the doorknob is easily accessed from the street. The more you have to come on to my property to use it, the more it is private.
  • Absolutely - testing my doorknob for traces of things like drugs is an intrusion on my household, like peeking in the windows.
  • I don't know.
  • I don't care.
