Cardinal: Children of Gay Couples Cannot be Baptized

Monday July 18, 2005
As the numbers of gay couples increases, so do the numbers of children being raised by gay couples. Churches may not approve of the gay relationships, but how will they treat the children? Some Catholic prelates insist that the children be discriminated against.

365Gay.com reports on events in Canada:

Testifying at a Senate committee hearing into the same-sex marriage bill Marc Cardinal Ouellet said that the Conference of Catholic Bishops has decided that if both parents want to sign the certificate of baptism the church will not allow the blessing to take place.

So, children won't be admitted to the Catholic Church if the church doesn't like what the parents are doing?

The cardinal also said that same-sex marriage threatens religious freedom. He told the committee that priests no longer feel comfortable preaching the morality of their own church for fear of being branded homophobes. "There's a climate taking shape where we don't dare say what we think anymore or we don't dare teach,'' he said. "Even in the pulpit we feel threatened in teaching the church's sexual morality. ... That's also part of religious freedom.''

How awful — priests aren't comfortable preaching their ideas because society is moving beyond them and they can no longer be sure that everyone else will quietly support their bigotry. Now that people recognize the bigotry for what it is, they will actually stand up and criticize these priests for what they are saying. I guess these priests must not be very confident in their beliefs if the prospect of criticism is enough to make them stop.
