The Right's War on Nipples

Women's nipples have become the latest target of the Christian Right's war on sexuality - not just the sight of actual nipples, but even just the hint of nipples beneath women's clothing. Apparently, we're supposed to believe that women don't actually have nipples until the moment they disrobe.

The Ottawa Citizens reports:

From Desperate House-wives' deployment of digital nipple-erasers to Victoria's Secret's nipple-negating bras, a campaign is under way to conceal one of the natural features of the female breast.

The producers of TV's Desperate Housewives have reportedly spent thousands of dollars digitally removing the nipples from on-screen images of actresses Teri Hatcher and Nicolette Sheridan. In discussing the show's "nipple problem," series creator Marc Cherry tells the Philadelphia Daily News: "Certain actresses really don't like to wear bras. And we try to accommodate them as much as humanly possible. ... So we've done a lot of blurring."

A similar situation exists on Canadian actress Pamela Anderson's new TV series, Stacked. In an April interview on Howard Stern's radio show, the actress complained that network censors ordered her nipples be "taped down" during filming so as not to offend prime-time audiences.

Who has really be harmed by seeing the shadow of a nipple through clothing? Will we soon start seeing legal measures that will fine women if their nipples ever show through in public? Maybe new laws to require that women wear multiple layers of undergarments in order to preserve both their honor and the innocence of the men they interact with?

You know, there are strong parallels between this and the way Muslim societies have forced women to cover up as much as possible. Both efforts rely upon the idea that women have a responsibility not to appear in public in a manner that will "arouse" or "distract" men. If women do, then any arousal or distraction is their responsibility and their fault.

This is so silly.
Almost all women have nipples, and have since Eve.
Actually, in Washington state it is no longer criminal for a woman’s nipples, or anything but her genitals, to be exposed in public wherever men can go in the same degree of dress/undress. Further, places where men can go shirtless cannot change the rule just to keep women from going topfree.
This was brought about by nosey nellies and kkkopz continued harassment of women breastfeeding in public places despite statute passed to protect them. Since breastfeeding moms can’t keep from exposing a big ole “nasty” (to prudish persons) nipple, or their kid from letting go and whirling around to see what’s going on and letting Mom’s great big red swollen nipple be displayed for the enjoyment of all (except for the prudez).

I fail to see where the religious right is mentioned in the article.

Seems you are putting words into the mouth of the article in order to get your diggs in at religion.

Besides, what self respecting member of the far religious right would be watching such programs in the first place?
