News items from the past week include a claim that liberals don't have the same family and church responsibilities as conservatives, an interesting analysis of America's perspective on God, the growth of the gay community in Mexico, questions about whether sex offenders should be given Viagra, claims about how atheists are responsible for Muslim hatred of America, and more.

Popes of the 10th Century
Here is a list of all of the popes who reigned during the tenth century. The first number is which pope they were. This is followed by their chosen name, the starting and ending dates of their reigns, and finally the number of years they were pope. Follow the links to read short biographies of each pope and learn about what they did, what they believed, and what impact they had on the course of the Roman Catholic Church.

Responses to Nihilism
Many of the most common responses to the basic premises of nihilism come down to despair: despair over the loss of God, despair over the loss of objective and absolute values, and/or despair over the postmodern condition of alienation and dehumanization. That does not, however, exhaust all of the possible responses - just as with early Russian Nihilism, there are those who embrace this perspective and rely upon it as a means for further development.

Charismatic Authority: Emotional Bonds of Leaders & Foll
Charismatic authority is perhaps the most unusual of the bunch - it is relatively rare compared to the others, but it is especially common to religious groups. Indeed, many if not most religions have been founded on the basis of charismatic authority. This sort of authority derives from the possession of 'charisma,' a characteristic which sets a person apart from others.

1) Corporal Punishment for Religious Reason: Permissible?
Although corporal punishment may be legal, there are those who believe that their religion authorizes or even mandates much more severe corporal punishment than most would administer - for example, beatings with a belt. Should more severe punishments be allowed if done for religious reasons?

2) What is the Definition of Atheism?
I encounter a lot of misunderstandings about the nature and definition of atheism. Some treat it like a religion, others treat it like a philosophy. Some evangelicals claim that atheism is the denial of God and some even say that atheism doesn't really exist. What do you think about the nature and definition of atheism?

3) Define Civil Marriage According to Christian Standards?
Many conservative, evangelical Christians insist that civil marriage laws should be written to match the way they believe marriage is also defined in traditional Christianity - thus imposing Christian marriage standards upon everyone - non-Christians, atheists, liberal Christians, etc. I this justified?
