Atheism, Belief, and Religion
Wednesday June 8, 2005
Many religious theists simply don't understand atheism. Because their theism and their religion are such central aspects of their personal identity, it's understandable that something as foreign as atheism may be difficult to comprehend. Less understandable is how these people don't even seem to try - but there are good resources available for them.
The Dangerous Man explains why he is an atheist and irreligious:
The main and most basic reasons for me not believing in a religion and being atheist are;
-I find insufficient evidence to support any religion.
-I think that Religion is nonsensical.
-I once had a religion and have lost faith in it.
-Religion doesn't interest me.
-Religion doesn't seem relevant to my life.
-Religions seem to have done a lot of harm in the world.
And:
-I do not (100%) believe in a god, god's or any form of supernatural being or being's.
-I don't use God to explain the existence of the universe.
-I believe that human beings can devise suitable moral codes to live by without the aid of Gods or scriptures if not now then in the future when we are all mature and evolved enough to understand.
The above post includes a nice explanation of what atheism is, what it is not, and why atheists generally critique religion alongside theism. He writes things that most atheists will generally agree with and it is thus very much worth reading.
