Pope Benedict XVI Loves Beer

Thursday May 19, 2005
The new pope, Benedict XVI, is German so it is perhaps no surprise that he has a preference for beer. In fact, he had a large shipment sent to him in the Vatican from Germany recently.

WTLV reports:

The Stuttgart brewery "Stuttgarter Hofbräu" had been struggling to sell its wheat beer until a label-change turned business around. ... The brewery sent a beer truck to Rome this past weekend to deliver 700 liters, or 185 U.S. gallons of beer to Pope Benedict XVI.

If anything is a surprise, it's that a man from Bavaria would prefer a beer from Baden-Württemberg! Granted, at least it's a wheat beer, but why not a beer from Munich? I haven't seen any papers from Munich, but I imagine that there were more than a few sarcastic comments about this.
