Rick Warren's bestseller The Purpose Driven Life has been attracting a lot of attention recently, but just what is in the book? Does Warren offer sound advice or nonsense?

The Charlotte Capitalist writes:

Does God exist? This is the obvious first question. Throughout “The Purpose Driven Life”, Rick Warren tells us that the only purpose of our lives is to serve and please God. But, that which one is supposed to serve and please should exist and Warren is obligated to provide us with that proof of existence.

But Warren provides no proof. He simply provides his first fear-filled false alternative by asserting: "You must begin with God, your Creator. You exist only because God wills that you exist. You were made by God and for God – and until you understand that, life will never make sense. It is only in God that we discover our origin, our identity, our meaning, our purpose, our significance, and our destiny. Every other path leads to a dead end." [p. 18]

The fear-filled false alternative Warren provides is either believe in God or you have got nothing to understand reality. Author Craig Biddle says of this view: “If there is no God, anything goes.” This popular claim is an eloquent distillation of a deep-rooted false alternative wreaking havoc on human life and happiness. The adage compresses into a few words the age-old debate over whether morality is a matter of “divine commandments” or “human sentiments”.

The Charlotte Capitalist examines the claims and arguments offered in Warren's The Purpose Driven Life over a series of several posts. Check them out, if you don't want to have slog through the book yourself.
