Ohio: Gay Marriage Ban Protects Unmarried Domestic Violence

By , About.com Guide   March 27, 2005

Follow me on:

Ohio voters passed a ban on "gay marriage" that broadly bans any law or regulation that would provide the same status to unmarried couples as married couples have. This, according to a judge, means that domestic violence laws don't apply to unmarried couples.

The Philadelphia Inquirer explains:

Wednesday's ruling by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Stuart Friedman changed a felony domestic-violence charge against Frederick Burk, 42, to a misdemeanor assault charge. ... Before the amendment, courts applied the domestic-violence law by defining a family as including an unmarried couple living together as would a husband and wife, the judge said. The gay-marriage amendment no longer allows that.

So, women living with men without being married will be in greater danger - but at least those nasty gays still can't marry! Maybe it will also discourage unmarried people from living together. What other sorts of legal protections can we remove from them to make their lives more miserable? That's what's most important to the Christian Right and here we can see the sorts of consequences we should expect from allowing their agenda to be translated into law.
