Chomping on Chocolate Crosses for Easter

Saturday March 26, 2005
Russell Stover Candies is selling chocolate crosses this Easter and some religious leaders are bothered by this. It seems that eating chocolate representations of one of the most gruesome and painful methods of execution in the history of humanity strikes some as... wrong.

ABC News reports:

Chomping on a chocolate cross can be offensive to some, said Joseph McAleer, a spokesman for the Roman Catholic diocese in Bridgeport, Conn. "The cross should be venerated, not eaten, nor tossed casually in an Easter basket beside the jelly beans and marshmallow Peeps," he said. "It's insulting."

Ward said Russell Stover considered making other traditional images out of chocolate but eventually opted not to. "A molded Jesus, for example, would not be a good call and a cross with Jesus on it wouldn't be a good idea either," Ward said.

What, no chocolate crucifixes to eat for Easter? If made large enough, they'll be able to achieve exquisite detail of Jesus' pain, crown of thorns, and itty bitty chocolate nails!

And why not a chocolate Jesus? they can even make it a Chocolate Risen Jesus, with holes in the hands and feet. Which part would you eat first?

And which would be more popular: White Chocolate Jesus or Dark Chocolate Jesus?
