South Carolina: Show Depicts Gays as Human, Outrages Legislator

Monday December 6, 2004
South Carolina Educational Television aired a documentary about the lives of gays in the South. This program included information about how they lived and the difficulties they experience. This was far too much for one lawmaker who wants SCETV's budge cut for promoting the militant homosexual agenda - you know, the agenda that includes depicting them as human beings.

The Beaufort Gazette reports:

"I thought it was just social, leftist propaganda that they had no business airing," said state Rep. John Graham Altman, R-Charleston. "They were actively promoting homosexuality as an OK thing to do." ... Altman sees the "Neighbors" documentary as an effort to promote a "militant homosexual agenda." ... "As soon as the session starts," he said, "I'm going after them."

The Southern Lens series has featured documentaries on Moon Pies and Holocaust survivors in South Carolina. ... All of the documentaries are independently financed and cost the state nothing.

The Christian Right's cacoethes for attacking anything that humanizes gay Americans is really bizarre. It seems clear that the documentary wasn't trying to encourage viewers to become gay; instead, it attempted a frank and open depiction of what it's like to be gay in the South. Humanizing gays contradicts the Christian Right's efforts to demonize them and portray them as the source of all evil in America.
