Man Insults Islam Online, Is Tracked Down

In Malaysia, a man who made "insulting remarks" about Islam on a web site was tracked down and identified by authorities. Yes, "insulting" Islam is so serious that it merits official attention and punishment.
The Star says:
Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik, who disclosed this, said police has identified him as a laboratory technician in his 30s from Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. ... "I am very surprised that a Muslim can do this to a fellow Muslim," he said after chairing the Gerakan central committee meeting today.
I'm depressed at the fact that Muslims in Malaysia are so insecure in their beliefs that they have to track down and punish people who say things about Islam that are unpopular and unliked. A religion worth following would be able to put up with criticisms — even unfair and insulting criticisms.

What do you mean a religion worth following would be able to put up with criticisms? A religion worth following is one that you defend. For example, if someone said something insulting about someone in your family, you are clearly not going to ignore that. if your proud enough of your family, you are going to defend them, so it is the same thing.
No true idea or belief system has to fear criticism.
If it’s worth following, it doesn’t need to be defended. No one has to “defend” the fact that the Earth is round or that 1 + 1 is 2. It may have to be explained to people who don’t understand them, but they don’t need to be defended.
A criticism is not the same as an insult. Pretending that they are is simply a way to avoid admitting that one’s religion is too weak to bear criticism.
It makes no sense to be “proud” of a belief. No one is “proud” of believing that the Earth is round or that 1 + 1 is 2. Why? Because there is no great merit or accomplishment in recognizing something as true.
So you are wrong. A family is not the same thing as a religion and a criticism is not the same thing as an insult.
