Ares (Roman: Mars), God of War

Tuesday October 26, 2004
Ares and Cupid Ares was the Greek god of war - or, more specifically, the god of fighting spirit. Most Greek gods were very similar to their Roman counterparts, but this is an unusual case. Whereas the Roman god of war, Mars, was honored the Greek Ares was looked down upon. This was reflected amongst the gods themselves: his own parents, Zeus and Hera, hated him. His sister was Eris (Strife) and his sons with Aphrodite (after she left his brother Hephaestus) were Phobos (Panic) and Deimos (Rout). The earliest references to Ares can be found on Linear B tablets of the Minoan era in Knossos, Crete. Image Gallery of Ares (Roman: Mars), God of War...
