Christians Seek to Secede from U.S.

Monday May 24, 2004
Christians who are fed up with the fact that they aren’t being allowed to dictate policy to everyone and impose their religion on others are talking about the possibility of seceding from the United States and starting their own country. Didn’t they try that once before?

World Net Daily reports:

"Our Christian republic has declined into a pagan democracy," says Cory Burnell, president of ChristianExodus.org, a non-profit corporation based in Tyler, Texas. "There are some issues people just can't take anymore, and [same-sex marriage] might finally wake up the complacent Christians." ... Burnell says South Carolina has been selected as the target location. ... "All these atrocities continue in spite of the fact that we now have the 'right' people in places of power. Indeed, the occupant of the White House is a professing Christian. The U.S. attorney general is believed to be a devout Christian. 'Conservatives' control both Houses of Congress, and Republican presidents appointed seven of the nine Supreme Court justices."
If all goes according to plan, Burnell is hoping to have a constitutional convention by 2014, with a president of the new nation – still to be known as South Carolina – elected in 2016, which is also a presidential election year in the U.S. He says the nation would be founded on Christian principles, and the people writing its constitution would have to hash out details to safeguard it as a Christian republic.

Basically, it would be a Christian theocracy where anyone who doesn’t adhere to Burnell’s brand of Christianity would be a second-class citizen. It is interesting, though, that Burnell refuses to given any details about what sorts of laws might govern this new “Christian” republic: “Independence first, details later.” Right. He and his plan sound very trustworthy, don’t they?

The Dark Window comments:

Killing, beating, torturing, and humiliating prisoners at Abu Ghraib (and breaking Geneva Conventions in the process) = fraternity hazing. Rules against fundamentalist Bible indoctrination in public schools and facilities = atrocities. Now I know I should be trying to say something snarky here but all I can think of is ATROCITIES??? What the hell is wrong with these people? Jeez!

The main issue seems to be gay marriage — that’s what bothers them most. Thus, what seems to be driving the call to secede is the preservation of marriage as an institution that is exclusively for one man and one woman.. Like I noted above, it seems that a bunch of god-fearing Christians tried to secede over the preservation of an institution before and that didn’t work out so well for them.
