Understanding Homeopathic Medicine

Sunday May 23, 2004
Homeopathy: How it Really Works Recently Received: Homeopathy: How it Really Works, by Jay W. Shelton. Publisher: Prometheus Books.

Homeopathy has become wildly popular in the United States - but does it work? Adherents say it does but scientists say it can't. Who is right? Perhaps they both are, but only because they are using "work" in different ways. For adherents, it may be accurate to report that people get better after using homeopathic remedies. For scientists, however, it is accurate to note that none of the basic principles of homeopathy have any connection to reality and that homeopathic treatments aren't themselves affecting the body directly. What's left? Our own body's ability to heal itself, encouraged by the belief that we are taking something effective.
