Women Can't Handle the Truth?

The Bush administration has made a habit of removing material from government web sites when that material is politically controversial. Now there is a new case where information on a lot of different women's issues has disappeared - information on women's health, women's economic status, scientific data, and more.

Deborah Zabarenko writes for Reuters:

"Vital information is being deleted, buried, distorted and has otherwise gone missing from government Web sites and publications," Linda Basch, president of the National Council for Research on Women, said in a telephone interview. "Taken cumulatively, this has an enormously negative effect on women and girls." ... The deletions and alterations appear to hew to a political agenda, rather than providing the nonpartisan, unbiased data that has been the tradition of U.S. government reports, the council said.

The political reasons for this and other decisions are obvious - George W. Bush is trying to appeas his Christian Right supporters, people who oppose basic equal rights for women, abortion, contraception, and a host of other things. Science is being sacrified for the sake of politics, not to mention religion.
