March 14, 1937: On this Passion Sunday the Pope Pius XI's encyclical "Mit brennender Sorge" was read at Catholic masses across Germany. Delivered to each parish by secret courier, the encyclical was critical of the Nazi government. German printing offices responsible for printing the encyclical were closed and the employees imprisoned.
