William "Pete" Knight, state senator in California, created Proposition 22 which established that "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." This prompted his son, David Knight, to come out of the closet as a gay man and denounce his father's policies. Now, David has gotten married in San Francisco.
Christopher Curtis writes for Gay.com:
The rings they exchanged were the same ones they exchanged for their civil union in Vermont two years ago. "That was our real commitment," the younger Knight told the San Francisco Chronicle. "This is to be part of what's happening across the country." ... Knight's father did not attend the ceremony in either San Francisco or Vermont. But for David Knight, everyone he needed for the San Francisco service was right beside him. "Joe is my family," Knight explained. "And my blood family that has accepted me is my family."
Somehow, I don't think that the Knight household is going to be an especially warm and happy place this coming Thanksgiving and Christmas, but then again I may be wrong and perhaps they'll manage to work it all out. Whatever happens, it is interesting to see just how many anti-gay Republicans seem to have gay family members - sometimes very close family members, in fact. One would hope that such connections would help to soften their views on homosexuality, but at least in the case of Knight, that hasn't happened.
