The Politics of the Paranormal
Recently Received: Possessions: The History and Uses of Haunting in the Hudson Valley, by Judith Richardson. The Hudson River Valley is just full of ghosts, it seems - ghosts of spies, of Revolutionary War soldiers, of presidents, of slaves... it's almost like no one ever leaves. Is it simply that this is an attractive place for ghosts to reside, or could the presence of these spirits have more to do with the political and social situations of the living who currently own the land? Just what sort of "possession" is really at issue here?
