One of the principle challenges to civil, secular, democratic society can be found among fanatical followers of fundamentalist religions. Whether Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, or Christian, they all seek to replace civil society with something more amenable to their religious beliefs. Some want to go as far as to create a new order founded upon strict adherence to their religious vision while others simply hope to change society enough to make it more religious.
