Girl, 10, Raped and Killed: God's Punishment for Father

Tuesday February 10, 2004
Nurul Huda Abdul Ghani, a ten-year-old girl, was raped and killed in Tanjung Kupang, Gelang Patah, Malaysia in January. According to the khatib (mosque official) of Masjid Batu, Permatang Pauh, this occurred as punishment from God because her parents did not support attempts to impose Islamic law on the region. And Islam is a "peaceful religion"?

Fortunately, other Muslims also find these statements to be completely outrageous and outside the bounds of any human decency. The Daily Express reports on the reaction of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi:

“I consider this as an act which totally lacks any emotion especially for the family who are suffering as a result of the tragedy,” he said when asked to comment on the statement of the khatib which was exposed in the readers’ column of the Malay daily Utusan Malaysia on Thursday. “I am not happy that the mosque is being used as a platform to spread views which are incorrect and creates a kind of impression among those who come to perform the (Friday) prayers,” he said Sunday.
“We cannot entrap those who are praying in the mosque by using the podium to make irresponsible statements,” he told reporters after attending a sacrificial feast in conjunction with Aidiladha. Abdullah said even the PAS leaders and its Ulama Council did not agree with the statement made by the khatib concerned.

Simply calling the statements by that official "outrageous" is an understatement, but unfortunately there is no shortage of such people among the leaders in Islam. Christians, Jews, and other religions have people like that as well, but there seems to be a greater prevalence of them in Islam and that's something that Muslims simply have to deal with.

Islam is a religion of peace and a religion of barbarism insofar as individual Muslims are peaceful or barbaric. It's not enough to claim that Islam is a religion of peace and actually being peaceful as an individual only goes so far. Actually doing something about the barbaric representatives of Islam is indispensible.

This writer is an idiot. To suggest that the Islamic religion is not a peaceful one is simply naive and racist. It makes you sound like every other conservative American ignoramous . No wonder Americans can’t travel the world without being looked at with disgrace. People like you demonstrate an insensitivity to other people’s cultures, beliefs, and rituals every chance you get.
You completely fail to distuinguish between the beliefs of a religion and religous politics. Corrupt leaders do not make an entire religion “un-peaceful”. Otherwise the Catholic church would be considered warlords.
Yes, something should be done about some of the barbaric Islamic fundamentalist leaders, but writing an article that suggests to the American public that the Islamic religion on the whole is not peaceful is fueling the problem.

If Islam is necessarily peaceful, then why are some Muslims violent?

It makes you sound like every other conservative American ignoramous.

Can you point to any errors I made, or only to things that you simply don’t like?

People like you demonstrate an insensitivity to other people’s cultures, beliefs, and rituals every chance you get.

That’s a pretty serious accusation. Can you support it, or are you simply demonstrating an insensitivity to my perspective?

You completely fail to distuinguish between the beliefs of a religion and religous politics.

Can you provide an objective and non-arbitrary means for distinguishing between them?

Corrupt leaders do not make an entire religion “un-peaceful”.

Where did I say anything about an “entire religion”?

Yes, something should be done about some of the barbaric Islamic fundamentalist leaders, but writing an article that suggests to the American public that the Islamic religion on the whole is not peaceful is fueling the problem.

Writing a comment that asserts that I say anything about “the Islamic religion on the whole” is a pretty serious statement… and a false one.
