It's Only a Flesh Wound!

Wednesday February 4, 2004
Not too long ago I reported on how James McLaughlin ("Dominion") was invited to debate claimed made by religious conservatives about America being a Christian Nation - and how this "New Knighthood" essentially ran away after James posted his critique of their arguments. Judge Moroz, the man who created the group, doesn't seem to have appreciated my comments.

Recently James posted again on the topic and was kind enough to quote Moroz's reaction to my earlier piece:

[I]t is amazing how they hate the fact America was founded by Christian men of honor, and how they selectively misrepresent the fact that this is expressly a group for Conservatives and Republicans working toward a common objective, that is, to change America for the better ... This site is obviously read by those who do not share the objective of this group. Sharing a vision of God and country, ethics and family values is disturbing to them, or they would not be seeking to discredit this site.

I wonder how Moroz would react if I wrote:

It is amazing how people like Judge Moroz hate the fact that America was founded with a secular government, and how they selectively misrepresent the fact that this is a site for skeptics and freethinkers working toward a common objective, that is, to change society for the better. Moroz's forum is obviously read by those who do not share the objective of skeptics and freethinkers. Sharing a vision of skepticism and reason, ethics and values is disturbing to them, or they would not be seeking to discredit this site.

What an arrogant and vile thing for me to write - fortunately, I wouldn't seriously post such a thing. You see, just because I disagree with Judge Moroz and think that James' critiques of his position were very good (what a shame he didn't address them), doesn't mean that I don't think he holds his views sincerely. I wouldn't claim that he "hates the fact that America was founded with a secular government" - he can't hate something he doesn't believe is true. That's ridiculous.

Pity that he isn't interested in extending the same basic courtesy and respect to others. No, he'd rather smear people just because they don't accept the same beliefs he does. I feel sad for anyone who has ever had the misfortune to appear in his courtroom.
