Moon/Mars mission - What's the Objective?

Aspie writes: I'm not sure exactly what is the objective of a new manned mission to the moon and/or mars? More photos? Raise another flag? How romantic. The probes I can understand - explore the surfaces of different planets and other solar system bodies. I'm all for improving the probes, as well as the methods used to send and retrieve them. But I really can't figure out why so much emphasis on manned missions. Obviously it would make good PR, but that's pretty much all there is to it. Anyone have a clue? Besides being a good tagline for Bush's electoral campaign that is.
