Clergy Love "Prestige Cars"

By , About.com GuideJanuary 25, 2004

Follow me on:

Christian clergy are supposed to be representatives Christ here on Earth - not necessarily in the sense that the pope is supposed to represent Christ, but still they are supposed to uphold a higher set of standards for conduct and morality. But do they? If they did, they wouldn't be so interested in fancy cars.

Peter Woodman writes for The Scotsman:

Church ministers are 11 times more likely to buy large prestige marques such as Mercedes Benz or BMW than the average car buyer. ... The survey also found that alongside farmers, bankers are four times more likely than the average car buyer to opt for a four-wheel drive vehicle such as the Land Rover Discovery or Nissan Terrano.

Why would ministers be so interested in BMW and Benz? I wouldn't begrudge them a decent car - something that is a decent value and lasts a fairly long time - but the emphasis should be on value, not prestige. Do their parishioners know what their church contributions are going towards?
