Taiwan VP: AIDS is Punishment for Gays

There was a time when prominent Americans would claim that AIDs was sent by God as punishment for the immoral lifestyle led by gays - but that is largely past. Today, you're likely to hear that sort of talk only from the really looney members of the Religious Right... unless you live in Taiwan. There, such views may be a bit more common.
Gay.com reports:
Vice President Annette Lu also told an AIDS awareness forum yesterday that the virus is the "wrath of God" sent to distinguish between men and animals. ... Taiwan is considered at the forefront of gay rights in Asia, and is currently debating whether to give marriage and adoption rights to same-sex couples. If legislation is passed, it will be the first country in the Asia region to offer such rights.
Odd, isn't it? How can a politician with such views rise to such prominence in a country where gay rights is so far along?
