No More Muslims!

Friday October 31, 2003
Anger and bigotry against Muslims has definitely increased over the past couple of years, despite the efforts of more responsible political and religious leaders. Over and over we hear about how evil and awful Muslims are, and now there is a call to keep them out of the United States.

That call appears in the New York Daily News in a column written by Stanely Crouch:

I have been writing for a while in this space that I believe we should have a moratorium on immigration from anywhere in the Islamic world because the nature of destructive technology is such that even very small numbers of immigrants - 19, for instance - can kill large numbers of people if that is their mission. War always shuts down borders, and we are, ladies and gentlemen, in a war. ... We also need to understand that the American Muslim community has been of virtually no help at all in our war against urban terrorism. ... What American Muslims need to understand, however, is that this is not a Muslim country, or else they would have probably been slaughtered in the thousands after Sept. 11.

Crouch claims that his suggestion is not bigoted because.... well, he doesn't really explain. There is a lame suggestions that the existence of thousands of Muslims who might want to commit acts of terrorism means that it is OK to bar immigration from any Muslim whatsoever, but that not a reason why he is not a bigot. On the contrary, it's exactly why he is a bigot: treating an entire ethnic, racial, or religious group badly because of the assumed properties of a minority of them is a textbook example of prejudice and bigotry. If I suggested random police searches of the houses of all blacks simply because some black people may have drugs, would any treat that as anything other than bigotry?

Thanks to Al-Muhajabah for the link.
