Churches Aghast at Vatican Condom Ruling

Wednesday October 15, 2003
Recently the Vatican issued a statement to the effect that condoms are ineffective when it comes to stopping the HIV virus and thus also AIDS. Other religious organizations have reacted very negatively, arguing that condoms are one of the best methods people have for fighting AIDS.

One of those organizations is the South African Council of Churches, as the Sunday Times explains:

Father Joe Mdhlela, an Anglican priest representing the SACC, which represents all South Africa's mainstream churches, including the Roman Catholic church, said Catholicism was failing to take the realities of the world into consideration. "I am shocked and disgusted with the Catholic church," he said. "There is undisputed medical evidence that condoms can help save lives. HIV/AIDS is a pandemic, and as the SACC, our belief is do what possible to save lives and limit the spread of the disease. "The Catholic church needs to look at the real world. The church's struggle is in its dogma and teachings and it is struggling to break loose from that."

It's really sad that the Vatican is putting dogma and doctrine ahead of people's lives like this. Why should others suffer and die because the Roman Catholic Church is unwilling to adjust their traditions?
