Churches Reject Heterosexual Marriages

Wednesday October 8, 2003
A lot of churches will refuse to bless same-sex unions... but now some churches are also refusing to officiate at heterosexual weddings. Why? Because they are protesting the fact that gays can't get married - so they are refusing to participate in the discriminatory system.

Michael J. Meade writes:

"It's not a happy stand to take but it's the right one," said the Rev. Dr. Cynthia L. Landrum as she signed a pledge not to sign the legal documents. "I think as more and more clergy sign this there are strength in numbers." Landrum  is a minister at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Gardner, Massachusetts.  She joins a growing list of Massachusetts clergy pledging not to sign state marriage licenses. ... "The one thing it really lets me do is live with my conscience," she said after signing the pledge and informing her congregation. Most of the ministers who have signed are affiliated with the Unitarian faith.

It is an interesting stand to take - and unfortunate for members of the congregation who want to get married in their church. I wonder what they are doing? Hopefully, this will be resolved soon...
