Creationism School Opens

Friday September 12, 2003
Creationism receives most of its support from fundamentalist and evangelical Christians in America; it does, however, have some following in other countries. One such country is Great Britain - there, a school is opening which is a joint project between the government and the Vardy Foundation. This school has a "creationism" stance where "biblical creationism" will be taught - partly with government funding.

The BBC explains:

The boss of Sunderland-based car dealership Reg Vardy has provided much of the cash for the school - and plans more throughout the UK. Pupils there are taught biblical creationism - the belief that the Old Testament account of creation is true - along with evolutionary theory. ... Sir Peter Vardy said: "Already, this school is over-subscribed, so there is demand from parents and students for organisations like this. "We are not brainwashing children, what we are trying to do is put something back into the region."

I pity the British educational system at this stage - not even in America have we had to face this. We might, however, as school vouchers become more popular. The prospect of government funds going to pay for religious teachings, including nonsense like creationism, is very strong. Strange that Britain would beat us to it.
