Laying the Cornerstone for the Temple Mount

Follow me on:

The End of Days: Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount Led by Gershom Salomon, a group known as the Temple Mount Faithful are hoping to place a symbolic cornerstone on the Temple Mount as a promise for rebuilding the Temple. They have been denied, but their desire and efforts are part of why Palestinian Muslims are so paranoid about anything the Israeli government does in relation to the Temple Mount. Tensions are high in this region and a primary cause is religious disputes such as this.

Haaretz reports:

Salomon said that this year, Tisha B'Av would be marked not only by mourning over the destruction of the temples but also by mourning over a Jewish government that allowed Palestinians to take control of the mount.

Religious nationalists like these would like to evict Muslims from the Temple Mount, destroy Islam's third-holiest shrine, and rebuild the Jewish Temple. This would likely cause a religious war that spans the entire Middle East, if not the world - but they aren't worried. They figure that this will be a sign that brings the Messiah to Israel, and that makes everything OK.
