Another Harry Potter Book Burning - with Bibles
Thursday August 7, 2003
Evangelical Christians don't like Harry Potter - they really don't like him or the books he appears in. These books by J.K. Rowling are so outrageous in their eyes that, apparently, the only good thing to do with them is just burn them - preferably in a big bonfire with as much public fanfare as possible.
As WZZM reports about the Jesus Non-denominational Church in Greenville:
"I don't want anyone to go to hell, and the bible says if people use sorcery and witchcraft they will go to hell," says Pastor Tommy Turner. ...The younger members of the church agree too. Kristi Eastman says many books teach that sorcery is okay. "I'm very strongly against witchcraft... because I know it's not of God and I do everything God wants."
It's curious, though, that this station didn't mention how the same church was burning Bibles as well, but WXMI does:
"They have changed it the key points in the Bible," said Bishop Tom Turner Sr. of Jesus Non-Denominational Church in Greenville. "The majority of it's probably the same, but it takes just a little bit to mislead people." So the Book of Mormon, versions of the Bible, even the Catholic Rosary, all went up in flames. Church leaders say any Bible besides the King James version that they use, are distractions.
Can't you just feel the Christian love emanating from this church?
