Founder of Humanistic Judaism to Leave Pulpit

Rabbi Sherwin Wine created the philosophy of Humanistic Judaism 40 years ago and, on June 27, 2003, he will retire from the Birmingham Temple outside of Detroit. This is the Humanistic congregation he created as part of an effort to establish a "fifth denomination" of Judaism. It now comprises 40 communities in the United States with around 40,000 members. At 75 years old, he will remain active, however, as the dean of the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism.
